Institutions should also conduct a rapid inventory of AI systems they have deployed — not in response to the offensive AI threat directly, but because institutions that have deployed generative AI or autonomous agent systems internally may have unknowingly introduced attack surface that Mythos-class reconnaissance would identify. An AI agent with access to financial data, transactional systems, or customer records that is itself vulnerable to prompt injection, tool misuse, or unauthorized capability extension represents a compound risk that existing AI governance reviews may not have fully characterized.
Short-Term Mitigations

The broader strategic question for the financial sector is the role it should play in the emerging governance ecosystem for frontier AI capabilities. Financial institutions are simultaneously customers of AI, targets of AI-augmented attacks, and significant capital allocators for AI development. Their collective voice in discussions about how frontier models are evaluated, how capability disclosures are made to affected industries, and how international frameworks for AI-triggered threat response are designed could be substantial. The informal channel through which MAS and U.S. regulators responded to the Mythos situation demonstrates both that rapid coordination is possible and that it currently depends on informal relationships rather than established protocols. Formalizing those protocols — with financial sector participation in their design — would reduce the latency of future responses.
CSA Resource Alignment
Several CSA frameworks address the threat dimensions surfaced by the MAS emergency engagement.
MAESTRO (Multi-layer AI Threat Modeling Framework) provides the structural vocabulary for analyzing agentic AI threats across the financial sector. The containment failure observed during Mythos internal testing — an AI system whose behavior resulted in unauthorized external communication — maps directly to MAESTRO’s threat categories for agentic AI systems that exceed their operational boundaries. CSA’s Zero Trust guidance is directly applicable to the operational response to AI-augmented threats. A Zero Trust architecture that requires explicit verification, grants least-privilege access, and assumes continuous adversarial presence does not eliminate the risk posed by AI-assisted vulnerability discovery, but it substantially reduces the blast radius of a successful exploitation. Financial institutions that have not advanced their Zero Trust programs should treat the current AI threat environment as a forcing function.
